BUDAPEST, March 25 (Xinhua) -- Italy took first place in the team event at the women's foil fencing World Cup here on Sunday.
After Saturday's Italy vs. Russia duel between Valentina Vezzali and Aida Shanaeva in the individual final, the two countries clashed again in the team final. Italy once more came out on top, winning 45-32.
The bronze medal was won by South Korea who beat France 45-42 in the quarterfinal before losing to Russia 44-34 in the semifinal.
Poland, France, and Hungary were placed fourth to sixth. The results mean that France obtained the Olympic women's foil fencing berth ahead of hosts Hungary who miss out.
China also miss out on the Olympic competition. The Chinese team's qualification prospects rested on reaching Sunday's final, but their slim hopes were dashed after losing the first match 45- 40 against the United States. China went on to beat Mexico 45-13, lose to Canada 45-38, and beat Hong Kong 32-24 to finish in 11th spot out of 17 participating teams.
Having qualified as the highest ranked Asian, China's Chen Jinyan, ranked 15th in the world, will compete in the individual women's foil fencing competition in London.
