Experts say parents should not do too much for children
BEIJING,April 1 (Xinhuanet) --A story about a kindergarten student's homework assignment has triggered heated debate among Chinese netizens as to whether parents should help their children do everything, the Chongqing Evening News reports.
Some five-year-old students at a local kindergarten in southwest China's Chongqing Municipality were given a homework assignment to create a family tree on a computer with photos and text. Many parents who believed their children could not complete the project on their own helped them or enlisted professional designers to do the work.
The story became a hot topic online after someone posted it on a microblog, stirring debate over whether parents help their children too much when it comes to homework. Netizens who believe that parents should let their children do the work themselves said such behavior would make the children too dependent on others.
But others argued that the homework assignment given to the kindergarten class was too difficult for five-year-old children and without their parents' help, they would have lagged behind others and felt frustrated.
The marketing director of the school, whose surname is Wang, said the purpose of the homework assignment was to encourage children to understand the relationship among their relatives and design their own family tree under the guidance of their parents.
Experts suggest that parents let children do their own tasks by themselves. Children can do much better than their parents expect them to do and become more independent and innovative by completing tasks on their own, said Zhou Yi, an education expert at Southwestern University.
