BUDAPEST, April 15 (Xinhua) -- Nicola Benedetti of Italy took the men's individual gold medal with a total of 6,000 points at the Hungarian Modern Pentathlon World Cup at Szazhalombatta outside Budapest on Saturday.
Despite starting the competition well with a third place finish in the opening fencing event, Benedetti's gold was thanks to a storming performance in the final run/shoot combined event.
The Italian started the final event in seventh place but finished first almost a minute ahead of his nearest rival, Andrei Moiseev, to overtake the Russian in the overall standings.
Moiseev finished with 5,944 points while Hungary's Peter Tibolya, who shared first place in the fencing discipline with Moiseev, took the bronze medal with 5896 points.
Denis Cerkovskis (Latvia), David Svoboda (Czech Republic), Stanislau Zhurauliou (Belarus), Serguei Karyakin (Russia), Stefan Kollner (Germany), Mihail Prokopenko (Belarus), and Adam Marosi (Hungary) filled out the fourth to tenth places.
The Hungarian event is the third of five World Cup meets which climax in the final in Chengdu, China, on May 26-27.
