BERLIN, April 19 (Xinhua) -- Spaniard veteran striker Raul Gonzalez Blanco won't extend his expiring contract with Schalke, both sides said on an official press conference on Thursday.
After almost two years at Schalke, Raul informed the club that he would not slip over the royal blue jersey for another season. Thus Raul leaves the club at the end of the season.
"After long and careful consideration I have made the decision that I will no longer play for Schalke next season," Raul said.
The 34-year-old striker and three-time Champions League winner joined Schalke from Real Madrid in 2010 and scored 27 goals in 64 matches.
Last season he won the German Cup (DFB Pokal) with the Royal Blues after a 5-0 win over second division team MSV Duisburg in the final. Raul mentioned the DFB Pokal win as a very special moment as he never won the competition with Real Madrid.
"There were several factors involved in my decision but the most important aspect is definitely my family. I will now sit down with my agent and take some time to consider the offers. What is certain, however, is that this league will not be as strong as the ones in Europe," Raul added.
Schalke plans a farewell game at the end of the season. Furthermore the club announced to reserve Raul's jersey number seven as an appreciation.
