No tsunami in Thailand yet after Indonesian quakes: official
BANGKOK, April 11 (Xinhua) -- The 8.6 magnitude earthquake that hit the Indonesian coast at 3:38 p.m. local time Wednesday did not lead to any dangerous wave at Thai coast, but possible waves from aftershocks are still closely monitored, an official said.
"Thailand was not affected by the first quake," said Somsak Khaosuwan, director of Thai National Disaster Warning Center, said in a TV interview.
However, the situation is still closely monitored for another two hours as there was an aftershock measured 8.2 magnitude off the Sumatra coast of Indonesia, said Somsak.
Both quakes could be felt in Bangkok.
The first quake was of horizontal rupture nature that did not cause big dangerous wave or tsunami, while the other has not yet been confirmed.
He added that residents far from the Andaman coast can go on with their routine lives, but those live near the beach need to evacuate.
Thai authorities then issued a tsunami warning, followed by evacuation orders for people living in six southern Andaman coastal provinces, namely Ranong, Phang Nga, Phuket, Satun, Krabi and Trang.
The Phuket International Airport has been temporarily closed.
