BUDAPEST, May 10 (Xinhua) -- Hungarian new president Janos Ader on Thursday vowed to "represent the interests and values of Hungarians" as he took up office in Budapest.
In a speech given at the presidential palace, Ader said Hungarians needed to "make a compromise with ourselves," and "treat each other with respect."
"There has always been the will and the ability in us Hungarians to rebuild what others have pulled down, to reunite what others have divided, and to win back what others have taken away," Ader said.
A former lawyer, Ader, who served in the Hungarian parliament between 1990 and 2009 before moving to the European Parliament, is Hungary's youngest president since 1989.
He was elected to a five-year term as Hungary's president on May 2 after former president Pal Schmitt stepped down following accusations that he plagiarized his doctoral thesis in 1992.
