On the 25th local time, a spokesperson for the Sri Lanka Navy said that a container ship parked near the port of Colombo in Sri Lanka due to a fire exploded on the same day and caught fire again. All 25 crew members on the ship had been safely evacuated and two of them were taken to the hospital.
According to reports, the Singapore-registered container ship named "X-PRESS PEARL" departed from Hazira Port in India on the 15th and issued a fire alarm when it arrived at the anchorage about 9.5 nautical miles northwest of the Port of Colombo on the 20th. There are 1,486 containers on board, including 25 tons of nitric acid and some other chemicals and cosmetics.
The Marine Environmental Protection Agency of Sri Lanka stated that several containers fell into the sea and it has launched an investigation to assess whether the incident caused damage to the environment.
