According to reports, a sergeant of the 1st Battalion of the US Marine Corps stationed at Pendleton Base in California was accused of dumping thousands of ammunition into a canyon in California. The 28-year-old Marine Corps sergeant named Gunnar Norton was charged with illegal dumping of ammunition, negligence of duty, and theft. He is currently being held in a prison cell at Pendleton Base.
The report quoted American Broadcasting Corporation San Diego News as saying that the Marine was arrested in a federal trapping operation. They discovered that the Marine was trying to sell ammunition and explosives online. Norton was accused of dumping a total of 3,724 5.56 mm caliber bullets, 6000 .45 caliber bullets, 1,826 9 mm caliber bullets, 120 shotgun bullets, 160 shotgun breaking bullets, 80 5.56 mm rupture bullets, 200 9mm hollow-point bullets, two grenades and one smoke grenades.
In addition to illegal dumping of ammunition, Norton was also charged with the theft of approximately 840 5.56mm bullets "on different occasions between November 1, 2020 and February 3, 2021." According to the description of the indictment, Norton took the ammunition box from the residence of a sergeant.
According to the report, Norton served in the Kansas Marine Corps in 2015 and was initially assigned as a biochemical, radiation and nuclear defense expert for the Marine Corps Disaster Response Force. According to service records, he joined the 1st Reconnaissance Battalion of the US Marine Corps in November 2019.
