After graduating from a prestigious overseas university and returning to China, Yang Xingyue became such a tutor. After all, everything is not as glamorous and simple as the surface. Yang Xingyue is an authentic Sichuan girl. After failing the college entrance examination, she entered a second college in Sichuan, where she majored in teacher-oriented English education. But she has always had a dream of a prestigious school in her heart. She refused to admit defeat and tempered herself at the university, and finally got the admission letter from the University of Edinburgh as she wished.
Yang Xingyue's postgraduate major is TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages, that is, teaching English as a foreign language), mainly to teach those whose mother tongue is not English to learn English.
In July 2020, Yang Xingyue returned to China. At that time, she was quarantined and observed with her graduate students. "I originally wanted to return to China to teach college students English, but by chance, my classmate received a message from her boss (current employer). Invited by a high-end tutor. After reading it, she felt that this requirement was tailor-made for me, so she urged me to'rush it'." It was by coincidence that Yang Xingyue became a full-time tutor after three interviews with the boss, personnel, and children. Working hours are from 16:00 to 20:00, mainly waiting for the children to pick them up after class, and then go home, eat, go to class, and play together. We are closed on Wednesdays and Fridays. On weekends, we have to accompany our children throughout the day.
Although it sounds like a simple thing to accompany people to eat, drink and have fun, Yang Xingyue told a reporter from Beijing Youth Daily that it was actually not as simple as imagined, "I was very enthusiastic before I started work, but I was a little frustrated after the contact. , Because it is not as easy as imagined. Especially for 4 hours of uninterrupted high-intensity attention to the child, you need to observe the child’s points of interest, and then evaluate, and pay attention to the child’s safety. During this period, it is in a state of standby at any time. ."
Yang Xingyue said that in the first period, she went home 4 hours later and she was completely abandoned. In addition, on weekends, she spends the whole day with the children. After the two-day shift last weekend, she feels badly injured, "It is really not easy, and the most difficult part of this job is that it does not have a clear commute point. The timing of work and rest is vague."
At the beginning of work, discover the characteristics of the child through trial and error
Yang Xingyue only serves one family and is responsible for two four- or five-year-old children. "The boss hopes that the children can grow up happily and healthily. It is not necessary for the child to have good grades or to be proficient in everything, but he has to have skills. Because With what they are good at, children will be very confident."
As the child continues to grow, Yang Xingyue also needs to constantly develop and improve her work schedule. "In the beginning I didn't know where children are more creative, so I will first set a general direction based on the description of the parents, and then focus on the daily companionship observation." She will let the child try many different Activities, such as singing, painting, roller skating, etc., in various trial activities, observe them, guide them, and finally evaluate whether they are interested in these projects.
"This process is very long. It requires constant trial and error, and then make adjustments, and finally summarize the child’s state. This trial and error cost I will set a period of time for myself, because you can’t say that the child is not interested in this matter. He kept doing it.” Slowly, Yang Xingyue found that the boss’s eldest child was particularly interested in painting, and he was much more sensitive to color perception and collocation. Children are more talented in language and sports, have special standards for English perception and pronunciation, and are very good at imitating.

Yang Xingyue's plan for the children covers various aspects such as living habits, social adaptability, language enlightenment and so on. At home, Yang Xingyue would let the children walk with things on their heads and train them through some very small things. She will also take them to participate in the most advanced technology exhibitions in the world, such as VR, to learn about the most cutting-edge technology products. But most often, take children to get close to nature to play outdoors, go to sandpits, climb high and low shelves, and learn to control their body's balance, strength, coordination, etc. during the play.
It’s the nature of children to play. Yang Xingyue has also encountered children’s resistance to learning. “Generally speaking, I think most of the reasons children resist learning are that the difficulty of learning is not suitable for them. Then you need to adjust the difficulty of learning. The way of playing allows them to enter the state of learning again."
Because the two children were relatively internalized and did not express their emotions, Yang Xingyue felt very powerless. "Every time I go back on vacation and ask them if they want me, they will say that they don't want me, why do they miss you." But while the children said they didn't want Yang Xingyue, they would rush over every time Yang Xingyue arrived home. Hold her and stick to her all the time.
Yang Xingyue smiled and said that as time got longer and longer, what this career brought to her was not only economic income, but more emotional bondage.
Occupation is not high or low. Yang Xingyue feels that there is not much difference between going to work and working in the company. In addition to writing weekly and monthly reports, she also asks herself to write a daily newspaper to record interesting things with children. She will also divide the weekly report into several sections: recent progress, assessment of the current situation of the child, the reasons for problems, etc., and fix them into a template.
