Many schools have only single digits in the number of applicants. Why didn’t the Beijing summer hosting company expect to be popular?
On July 19th, the first Monday after Beijing elementary and middle school students started their summer vacation, there were many children on the supposedly quiet campus.
Earlier, the Municipal Education Commission announced that this year, the district Education Commissions will organize care services for students in grades one to five in this city. The custody period is from July 19 to August 20, divided into two periods, each with 12 days.
The reporter found that although the school arranged a rich life of trusteeship for the students, the registration situation was not as hot as expected. Many schools had only single digits in the number of applicants. Experts said that the healthy growth of students is the ultimate goal of hosting services, and there can be more options for summer hosting.

52 students from 15 schools became classmates
In the library of Zhongguancun Sanxiaonan Campus, small sofas, tables and chairs are lined up. After listening to the teacher's introduction of the book classification and location, more than 20 elementary school students spread out, looking for their favorite books, and began to read the ocean. Wander around. "Just now it was our independent study time. I discussed the summer homework with my classmates. Now it is reading time. We will go to play games and watch movies in a while. I thought I was just here to do homework. I didn't expect it to be fun. Yes." said Chen Qixuan, a student in Zhongguancun No. 3 Primary School.
"Close your eyes, relax, and look out the window..." Between reading, the children sat in groups and followed the music instructions to do eye exercises...
According to the requirements of the Municipal Education Commission, the summer care services are mainly nursing care. The contents mainly include providing learning places, opening libraries, reading rooms, and organizing sports activities. Schools are not allowed to organize subject training and group teaching. Therefore, not only the third elementary school in Zhongguancun, but also many schools in this city have given full play to their respective advantages and designed a rich and colorful life of trusteeship for students.
"Stretch your hands up, inhale, exhale, squat, hold..." At the Shou Economic and Trade Primary School, 52 students from 15 nearby schools became classmates this summer. Under the leadership of the physical education teacher, the students moved to the rhythm of the music, swaying enthusiasm and vitality in a sweat. According to the principal Zhang Xiaohong, the school arranges special sports time every day. "When the weather is cool, we organize students to exercise on the playground; if the weather is too hot or rainy, we will also organize students to do indoor exercises indoors." During the custody period, the school has at least six teachers visiting the school every day, including one cadre , A school doctor and four teachers. Daily courses will also be personalized according to the subject and expertise of the host teacher. Various activities such as insect interest enlightenment, music appreciation, board games, etc. are all on the class schedule. "We set aside one or two classes every day to allow students to study independently and complete summer homework. The rest are practical and expansion activities."
"With my friends, I won't be alone in the summer vacation."
Students voluntarily sign up in accordance with the principle of nearby and convenient custody. Judging from the actual registration for the first period of hosting, the number of applicants from each school is not too many, and many schools have only single digits.
Recently, Chu Zhaohui, a researcher at the Chinese Academy of Educational Sciences, conducted research on the topic of summer trusteeship. He found that most elementary school students are reluctant to participate in trusteeship. Some students said bluntly, “It’s hard enough to go to school every day when there’s no holiday, and I have to go to school after the holiday, which is psychologically repulsive.” “When I go to school, I look forward to the holiday every day. NS."
Some school officials analyzed that during the normalization of epidemic prevention and control, students still have to wear masks while in school. Some binding regulations are also the reason why some parents did not sign up.
Even the students participating in the trusteeship are not entirely "voluntary". When asked why they participated in the custody, many children answered exactly the same, "My parents asked me to come." Some parents even participated in the custody without the actual need for custody. The person in charge of a school revealed that the mother of a student in the class was a full-time housewife, but felt that it was easy to get upset looking at a noisy child at home, so she also signed up.
Of course, there are also children who find fun in summer care. "This is much more interesting than staying at home!" In the third elementary school in Zhongguancun, a girl from Bayi School excitedly pulled her new friend. She told reporters that her parents are busy at work, and during the holidays, they would sit at home for a day, which was especially boring. "This year is different. If you have a small partner, you will not be alone." Sun Jialu, a student from the Primary School of Economics and Trade, also participated in the first period of trusteeship with great joy. You must finish your homework well, arrange other activities steadily in the rest of the time, and no longer have to be busy with homework a few days before the start of school."
"It can only be hosted for 12 days, which is not enough"
"Summer custody is a great help to our dual-career family!" said the parent, Ms. Dong, who heard that the school had a summer custody program, so she signed up for her child as soon as possible. She and her husband are usually busy with work. In previous years, they sent their children to the elderly to ask the elderly for help. "The old people are not talking about their hard work, and we are also worried that the children are only thinking about playing mobile phones and watching tablets all day at home. When they are at work, they always have to call home to ask a few words before they can rest assured. Now it's fine. Put the children in school. We felt relieved to be accompanied by a teacher and playing with peers. "Mr. Sun is a second-child family. His daughter is in fifth grade and his son is only 4 years old. "On weekends, the eldest daughter can't study hard because of his son's noise. It's much more reassuring to go to school to participate in trusteeship than to enroll your child in a tutoring class."
However, some parents feel that the 12-day custody is a little unsatisfactory. According to the regulations of the Municipal Education Commission, each student can only participate in one term of trusteeship at most. "I know that the teachers are very hard, but there are more than 40 days in the summer vacation and can only take care of 12 days. We still have to think of other ways for the rest of the time."
Some parents have made summer vacation arrangements for their children in advance, keeping a "wait-and-see" attitude towards the new thing in the custody class. The third-grade parent, Ms. Zhou, said that she deliberately arranged the annual vacation in the summer vacation. As early as more than a month before the vacation, she had arranged the child's summer vacation properly: participate in tutoring every morning, when there is no tutoring, study and read independently; in the afternoon It's time for physical exercise; self-reading in the evening and individual activities.
Normalized custody requires a more robust mechanism
"Teachers are overburdened" has become one of the focus topics brought about by the trusteeship policy. In fact, the 12-day trusteeship cycle is allocated to each teacher, and the time is not too much. However, although the burden is not heavy, the actual difficulties are obvious.
The Municipal Education Commission requires that all districts, based on actual conditions, determine the schools to be managed by subdistricts and townships. This also means that a considerable part of the objects of the teachers' care are not students of the school, which adds a lot of difficulty to the management of the school undertaking the custody service. For this reason, the Attached Primary School of Capital Economics and Trade specially made a badge for each student. The student wears the badge to enter the school. After school, the teacher will hand over the student to the parent. The Zhongguancun No. 3 Primary School also guarantees that the student is in the parent Safe docking with the teacher.
In addition, for many teachers, how to get acquainted with students and mobilize their enthusiasm for activities in a short period of time is also a brand new test.
"In the summer trusteeship, we are duty-bound to highlight the dominant position of public education. However, if it is implemented as a normalized policy, a more complete mechanism is needed." A school person in charge said the voice of many colleagues.
In the view of some schools, the options for summer custody should be more abundant. For example, communities and venues can all become the sponsors of custody. Lu Yugang, director of the Department of Basic Education of the Ministry of Education, stated that the school cannot fully assume the responsibility of the school during the holidays. Schools take the initiative to assume social responsibilities, which is an approach actively advocated by the Ministry of Education; but at the same time, social forces are also encouraged to shoulder them together. The Municipal Education Commission also proposes that all sectors of society and related units should give full play to their resource advantages and actively provide summer care services for primary and middle school students.
Hosting can't just aim for student safety
Chu Zhaohui believes that vacation care starts from meeting the needs of some parents, and aims to solve the problem of "difficult care" for young students during summer vacation. However, it cannot be satisfied. It needs to aim at the healthy growth of students and also needs to take care of it. This is the standard for planning, implementation, selection and requirements for hosting services.
"The objects of holiday custody are young people who are living and growing up with personality. They are not ordinary objects. The premise is of course to ensure safety, but it cannot stop at ensuring safety." Chu Zhaohui said, parents, custodians and management All parties must make it clear that parents are the indirect objects of the custody service, and solving problems for parents is not the ultimate goal; students are the direct objects of the custody service, and the healthy growth of the students is the ultimate goal. It is a higher-level need and requirement than safety. It ignores children for the sake of parents, and ignores and suppresses the healthy growth of students for safety.
Chu Zhaohui said that, generally speaking, 4 years old is the starting point for children's autonomous and rapid growth, and the primary and middle school stages are the critical period for students' autonomous growth. However, because most of the students’ time, space, and activities have been filled with families and schools, many students’ autonomy has not been generated normally, and instead they have formed a typical passive personality. "Teachers and parents do whatever they ask. I don’t know what to do when I’m alone, and I’m unable to generate my own life and learning goals. This has become a prominent problem that affects the normal growth of Chinese students on a large scale."
Chu Zhaohui believes that vacations have always been an important link in the growth of minors and a rare window of time for the development of autonomy; from the perspective of healthy growth, students too need a vacation that is very different from the semester. Be happy in nature and society and learn to arrange your own life by yourself.
