Michelle Williams certainly exudes Marilyn Monroe-worthy sex appeal on the cover of GQ’s February issue.
Hot off her win at the Golden Globes, the normally private actress is opening up and showing off her curves. In the interview she talks about everything from her Montana upbringing to her days on Dawson’s Creek, but she gets serious when talking about the death of her late partner, actor Heath Ledger. The actor died in January 2008 from an accidental drug overdose.
Death is obviously difficult for everyone, but try dealing with it while being bombarded by a paparazzi storm.
“It was making me crazy. I felt like I was going crazy,” Williams told GQ. “It was too much—trying to deal with what had happened and trying to deal with what was at our doorstep. I just felt trapped.”
Williams met Ledger in the summer of 2004 on the set of the film, Brokeback Mountain. Their extreme attraction to each other was evident right from the start.
“Our initial meeting, the circumstances of how we first met, were cosmic or something,” Williams said. “Yeah, a lot of things happened at once. It’s a bit like: We had a lot of things to do because we didn’t have a lot of time or something.”
There’s no denying their relationship moved quickly. Williams was pregnant soon after the film wrapped with their daughter Matilda, now 6. Williams struggled with how to keep her from the madness surrounding her father’s death.
“And it’s not just me—there’s somebody else who I’m trying to protect, and I can’t. I can’t make it stop; I can’t make it go away. Trying to find ways to explain it or shield her from it. It’s like you’re trying to go about your life, and make dinner…but the roof is off of your house, and the walls are falling down.”
The couple split in late 2007. Williams first heard about Ledger’s death while working on the film, Mammoth, in Sweden. After the incident, Williams returned to New York to do a final week of shooting. She was also committed to start work on Martin Scorsese’s Shutter Island.
“I don’t remember most of it,” Williams said. “I’ve got a lot of holes.”
