PYONGYANG, Feb. 16 (Xinhua) -- The Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) held a military parade Thursday to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the birth of late leader Kim Jong Il.The parade of the three services of the Korean People's Army (KPA) was held on the square at the front of the Kumsusan Memorial Palace, in the northeast of the capital.Kim Jong Un, supreme leader of the Workers' Party of Korea (WPK), state and army of the DPRK, attended the parade.Kim Yong Nam, member of the Presidium of the Political Bureau of the WPK Central Committee and president of the Presidium of the Supreme People's Assembly (SPA) made a speech before the start of the parade.He said the Kumsusan Memorial Palace had been renamed the Kumsusan Palace of the Sun in honour of late president Kim Il Sung and late leader Kim Jong Il and to pledge loyalty to Kim Jong Un, in a joint decision made by the Central Committee of the WPK, Central Military Commission of the WPK, DPRK National Defence Commission, Presidium of the SPA and the DPRK Cabinet.Choe Yong Rim, member of the Presidium of the Political Bureau of the WPK Central Committee and premier of the Cabinet, Ri Yong Ho, member of the Presidium of the Political Bureau of the WPK Central Committee and chief of the KPA General Staff, and other senior party, government and army leaders also attended the ceremony.The Kumsusan Memorial Palace, built in 1976, served as the official residence and office of Kim Il Sung. The biers of Kim Il Sung and Kim Jong Il were laid in the palace, which has been visited by an endless stream of DPRK people.Kim Jong Il died on Dec. 17, 2011. His birthday, Feb. 16, which is now a national holiday, has also been designated "the Day of the Shining Star."

PYONGYANG, Feb. 16 (Xinhua) -- The Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) held a military parade Thursday to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the birth of late leader Kim Jong Il.

Kim Jong Un, supreme leader of the Workers' Party of Korea (WPK), state and army of the DPRK, attended the parade.
