Celebs Dissed for Their 'Dos
When a celebrity changes up their look, everyone has an opinion about it -- and they're not all complimentary! Check out the hairstyles that taught Emma Watson, Keri Russell, Brad Pitt, and more this lesson firsthand. -- By Raechal Shewfelt, omg!
As filming of the eight-part "Harry Potter" movie franchise came to an end in the summer of 2010, actress Emma Watson, now 21, was quickly becoming one of Hollywood's most stylish starlets. It was only natural then that the British beauty, who had kept her locks long for 10 years to play Hermoine Granger, wanted to experiment with her hair once she was free to do so. But while she was excited for the change, some people were confused by her new,
Like dozens of teen idols before him, Justin Bieber had a signature song, the sugary sweet "Baby," and a look that included a perfectly executed hairstyle known as "the Bieber. The singer, who just turned 18, made millions of girls swoon with his shaggy, pushed-to-the-side strands from the time he hit the scene in 2009. (He also came to be rapidly mocked for the look.) As he's aged -- can you believe he's an adult now? -- Biebs has sported ...
Pop princess Britney Spears was known for flipping around her long blond locks as she danced seductively on stage. That's why everyone was in complete shock when she suddenly shaved her head in February 2007. Even fans who disapproved of her scandalous behavior in the months leading up to the unexpected salon session realized then that something was very wrong with the "Toxic" songstress. By the following January, Brit had to be taken by
Sure, Brad Pitt delivered an Oscar-nominated performance in "Moneyball," but everyone knows the real reason fans liked it so much is that it we got to see a fresh-faced Brad. The baseball flick marked one of the rare times the actor has been seen sans scruff (or without an even longer Rip Van Winkle-esque beard) in the last few years. Part of it's undoubtedly the influence of Brad's partner Angelina Jolie, who's said she "loves Brad in any state," beard or no beard. Aww
Call it a coincidence, but we say actress Michelle Williams' transition from a cutie on "Dawson's Creek" to an oh-so chic three-time Oscar nominee had a lot to do with her decision to opt for a super-cropped, sophisticated cut in May 2010. Still, the "My Week With Marilyn" star explained that not everyone is gaga for it. "The only people who like it are gay men and my girlfriends," she confessed to Elle UK in December. "Straight men across the board are not into this hair! I [first] cut it for the one straight man who has ever liked short hair and I wear it in memorial of somebody who really loved it." The straight man was, of course, Heath Ledger -- the 31-year-old's former flame and the father of her daughter -- who died in 2008.
Michelle Williams' "Dawson's Creek" co-star, Katie Holmes, 33, has also faced backlash for a style choice. Suri's mom created some controversy in 2008 when she transformed her long, dark tresses into a dramatic chin-length bob with bangs. While some argued it was tres chic and signaled a new era for the actress, others chalked it up to one more questionable move she had made since her 2006 marriage to mega-star Tom Cruise. "When fame happens, a lot of people think you're changing," Holmes has said. Do you think Katie's hair changes were for the better
Years from now, when the WB's beloved series "Felicity" is just a footnote in the annals of pop culture history, the main character's bold decision to chop off her long curly locks as a way to start over after a breakup in September 1999 will still be remembered. It was such a big deal at the time that the network president admitted that it "turned some audience away" and caused a drop in the ratings. Still, at least one person was happy with the style switch: Keri Russell, the actress who played the college sophomore in the show's title. "I think it was a brave, crazy, sudden, extreme thing to do, but those are all things a girl in college are, and I think it was quite appropriate," Russell said. "For me [as a person], that long hair is how I was identified. So, it was nice to be out of that. It was good and liberating for me."
Rarely has the world been so divided over than it was over whether Robert Pattinson's dissheveled hair was super sexy or just sloppy. Shrieks from the many fans of the "Twilight" franchise proved that they, of course, thought the former, while the rest of us just thought he should take a shower. The 25-year-old really shook things up then when he shaved his head in January. Now he doesn't have to worry about washing his hair at all!
Celebs always color their hair when they want to change up their looks, but Kelly Osbourne, 27, truly shocked us this year when she opted to dye her locks a purplish gray hue -- a color many people dye their hair to hide! "I think that I have an addiction to dying my hair, because I always like it to be different," the "Fashion Police" judge has said. "I don't like being compared to other people." We admire your individuality, Kelly, but this particular look just doesn't do it for us!
Oh, what some actors will do for the love of the craft! Vanessa Hudgens, 23, might have gotten her start in the cutesy Disney movie "High School Musical," but that doesn't mean she's not serious about her performances. In fact, the bohemian babe, who usually leaves her dark hair long and wavy, hacked off her precious locks herself to film the upcoming movie "Gimme Shelter," in which she plays a pregnant, homeless teen. Since the change was for work, not by choice, it didn't receive much criticism from fans. Oddly enough, it was Vanessa herself who panned it. "Honestly, I kind of feel like a soccer mom, but we're going to let that go," she told "Access Hollywood" in July 2011. "There's nothing wrong with soccer moms, but I'm only 22! I miss [my hair,] believe me, I do, but there's nothing I can do about it." Well, at least it'll grow back, right?
Yikes. Like most of us, Rumer Willis' decision to go for an ultra-cropped, bleach-blond 'do in September 2008, is probably one of those mistakes of her youth the 23-year-old would like to forget ... or at least we'd like to forget that hair nightmare. For whatever reason, Rumer claimed she actually liked the look at the time, which was inspired by her "House Bunny" role that required a blond wig. "I always find that whenever I'm doing something big in my life, I want to change the hair," she told People. After making several bad celebrity hair lists, we're just happy Rumer eventually switched back to being a brunette!
Remember when Kate Gosselin was just a reality show mom? Of course, that was before she was well known for much more, including her nasty high-profile split with Jon, her reported diva-esque behavior on "Dancing With the Stars" and alleged plastic surgery. No, back then, Gosselin was most disliked for her crazy spike of hair that was even made into a Halloween costume! The mommy of eight finally ditched the look in early 2010, replacing it with extensions in a process that took 20 hours. The only problem? Kate took a while to warm up to it, saying "it's weird" in an online video she posted about the change. Whatever you say, Kate! Since she kept the look, it appears the new 'do eventually grew on her!
