Shenzhen's entry port to reopen after fire

GUANGZHOU - A major port linking Hong Kong and Shenzhen city may resume operation Tuesday morning after firefighters put out a blaze in a customs building on Monday night, officials said.

No casualties have been reported since the fire was extinguished at 10:40 pm. The closing of the Luohu Port following the fire delayed about 100 people at the port's checkpoint, said Zou Donghui, an official in charge of the port's operation.

An average of 280,000 passengers pass through the Luohu Port, located in Shenzhen, to the Hong Kong special administrative region or to the Chinese mainland every day, Zhou said.

Local fire control authorities received a report at 8:50 pm stating that heavy smoke was belching from an 11-story customs office at the port, firefighters said. An initial probe indicated that the fire was caused by malfunctioning electrical wiring on the third floor.
