Supermodel Heidi Klum is recognized as being a blonde bombshell, but the German-born beauty is a natural brunette. "My hair is heavily colored," she tells omg!, before going on to explain why she left the dark side. "One of my first big jobs was a perfume campaign for Givenchy, and they actually wanted a blond girl with blue eyes, so they colored my hair blond and gave me blue contact lenses, which at the time was a very unusual thing to do. It took forever for me to get the [contact lenses] in and out because I don't wear contact lenses!"
Klum, who was revealed as the face of the new hair care line Clear Scalp & Hair Beauty Therapy last week, also happily went platinum blond for an Elle cover at the request of French photographer Gilles Bensimon, and apparently liked the lighter look.
"When you do this for jobs, then you start seeing yourself in the mirror and you're like, 'Oh, that's cool.' You're young and you do all these different things. And then I kind of liked myself better as a blonde. I felt more special, just to look different. As a model, you think it's great when you look different from what you normally look like, so I kept it blonde."
So blondes do have more fun?
"I don't know if blondes have more fun," she laughs, "but as a blonde you do stand out more and it's just because I think that the eye naturally is attracted to brighter things than it is to darker things."
But color isn't the only thing that's changed when it comes to the "Project Runway" judge's tresses. "After having children, the back of my hair went curly and the front is still straight so now I have to deal with both!" says the mom of four, noting that's exactly why she needs a trusty shampoo like Clear Scalp & Hair Beauty Therapy, the brand she now represents. "What won me really over was their new approach — about nourishing the scalp to get stronger more beautiful hair," she shares. "Everyone thinks about the split ends or the dry hair, but never really thinks about feeding the scalp."
Aside from her unpredictable locks, something Klum also finds difficult to work with at times is her eclectic sense of style. "Sometimes it's preppy, then it's kind of slouchy pants, sneakers, and a T-shirt, then it's leather and a cool blouse. My style is kind of all over the place. I don't really have one look," she admits. "I like to mix it up. It's difficult, to be honest. I always look at [designer and 'Project Runway' judge] Michael Kors and I'm like it is so easy for him! He wears a black T-shirt, a black blazer, either a black pair of jeans or a blue pair of jeans, and loafers every single day. He doesn't have to worry about anything! It's difficult when you have an eclectic style because there are so many different things in the closet, and [it's hard] to rework them over and over in different ways. It's much easier to be Michael Kors!"

(Dimitrios Kambouris/Getty Images for QVC)Though she's a fan of attire designed by Kors, Rouland Mouret, Marchesa, and the Olsen twins to name a few, Klum says she "fantasizes about shopping at H&M. When I go there I am overwhelmed," she explains. "I'm like, what is going on here?" Surprisingly, the 38-year-old admits that she really doesn't like to go clothes shopping all that much. "I shop more for accessories, or for inspirational pieces for my jewelry line. I go to flea markets. I have more fun doing that than shopping for clothes."
Which explains why she is so passionate about the Wildlife by Heidi Klum collection she created for QVC. The model will be promoting her latest jewelry line on QVC this Thursday, "I'm introducing more watches," she shares. "We're right on trend with all the neon — I did these rubber neon bands mixed in with rhinestones. They're a lot of fun. Big cocktail rings, earrings and necklaces, a lot of mixed metals. I do all of it."
Between being a mom and her many business endeavors, it's hard to imagine that Klum has any time to do anything, let alone design jewelry, but she insists that all of the Wildlife designs are her own. "I can tell you exactly when I find the time — every Saturday at 7:30 a.m. for two hours before we go and do the children's activities. That is my time!"
