The couple have been together for nine years, but did not reveal their engagement
Mark Zuckerberg and Priscilla Chan looked formal and unaffectionate in their posed up wedding photos - but Judi says their awkward poses mask real devotion
Mr Zuckerberg announced the news on his own personal Facebook page
Billionaire Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg married his girlfriend of nine years in a surprise ceremony held at their California home this weekend.
For a man who has made billions from encouraging the world to share, it was a very private event. The ceremony was so secret that even the guests did not know they would be attending a wedding.
They turned up at Zuckerberg’s £4.5million home in Palo Alto, California, thinking they were there to celebrate Priscilla Chan’s graduation from her degree in paediatrics.
Clearly this is a couple who do not relish attention. Indeed, the body language in the two photographs released from the occasion show the two looking distinctly awkward.
The man more at home in a hooded top and trainers was dressed in a dark suit and tie for the occasion, and posed for two wedding pictures in the garden of his home.
Not for them the easy intimacy expected of a bride and groom on their wedding day. In fact, some remarked how the two looked almost like strangers.
We asked body language expert Judi James to reveal what was really going on between the newlyweds.
JUDI JAMES says:
There are no active expressions of the kind of affection displays we normally associate with traditional wedding poses, like gazing into one another's eyes, body or head closeness or even hugging or kissing.
The bride looks much keener to create a more traditional display here, with her head tilted towards his or her torso tucked in towards him.
Otherwise, on the surface they could almost look awkward enough to be strangers.
There could be several reasons for this. In his case, I guess it is prompted by geeky diffidence and embarrassment.
He seems to be in a state of eternal teen with his body language.
Despite being one of the world's richest and most powerful men he poses and dresses here as though he's been pressed into looking and acting right on the day, but shyness plus a bit of rebelliousness might have taken over.
You need to look at the hand clasp and his beaming smile to track the true levels of affection.
On close inspection, these poses are actually rather sweet because despite Mark's efforts to adopt what looks like a suitable cool, casual and non-traditional approach, with the undone collar and hand shoved casually in one pocket, all his more spontaneous gestures define him as a very traditional and delighted groom.
His facial expression has broken out in a boyish grin and although he's avoiding the expected public display of affection, when he walks his chest has an alpha, non-geeky puff.
His bride is far more traditional, tucking her shoulder in behind his and tilting her head in a way that looks demure and compliant.
The couple's entwined fingers suggest subtle affection. For all their awkwardness, actually these two are entirely devoted.
