Enhanced China-Russia ties jitters Washington
As the United States plans its return to Asia, China and Russia are enhancing their strategic cooperation through the Shanghai Cooperation Organization. The recent visit by Vladimir Putin to Beijing to attend the SCO has been viewed by some American media as a clear signal that Russia is teaming up with China to counter the United States. The absence of Putin from the G8 summit at Camp David, Maryland in mid-May was seen as a soft confrontation between the Russian president and the US. This time, Putin's high-profile visit to Beijing is just sending a subtle message to the United States that the China-Russia strategic cooperation is set to deepen. At the meeting of the SCO, of which several former Soviet states in central Asia are also members, China and Russia reiterated their opposition to foreign military intervention in or economic sanctions against Syria, while advocating a peaceful resolution to the nuclear programs of the DPRK (or North Korea) and Iran. They also reemphasized that no third country should interfere in the internal affairs of countries in the region. All these messages alluded to the United States.Since China and Russia signed the Treaty of Good-Neighborliness and Friendly Cooperation in 2011, bilateral relations between the two countries have grown and mutual visits by senior officials have become frequent, laying the foundation for a strategic partnership. In the face of Washington’s ‘Asia Pivot’ and a series of eastward strategic shift, Russia is also under pressure from NATO's expansion into East Europe and NATO's missile defense system.Admittedly, there are structural barriers to better China-Russia relations. Due to differences in history, geography and culture, the two countries cannot see eye to eye with each other about anything. This, however, will never hinder the progress of China-Russia relationship, as further development of bilateral ties is in the interests of the two peoples and in tune with times and situation.“As each other's largest neighbor and most important strategic cooperation partner, China and Russia are experiencing unprecedented good relations. Their relations have hit an all-time high," as was cited as saying by Li Hui, Chinese Ambassador to Russia.
